Bro - Passive Open-Source Network Traffic Analyzer
While focusing on network security monitoring, Bro provides a comprehensive platform for more general network traffic analysis as well. Well grounded in more than 15 years of research, Bro has successfully bridged the traditional gap between academia and operations since its inception. Today, it is relied upon operationally in particular by many scientific environments for securing their cyberinfrastructure. Bro’s user community includes major universities, research labs, supercomputing centers, and open-science communities.
Bro is a passive, open-source network traffic analyzer. It is primarily a security monitor that inspects all traffic on a link in depth for signs of suspicious activity. More generally, however, Bro supports a wide range of traffic analysis tasks even outside of the security domain, including performance measurements and helping with trouble-shooting.
Features
- Deployment
- Runs on commodity hardware on standard UNIX-style systems (including Linux, FreeBSD, and MacOS).
- Fully passive traffic analysis off a network tap or monitoring port.
- Standard libpcap interface for capturing packets.
- Real-time and offline analysis.
- Cluster-support for large-scale deployments.
- Unified management framework for operating both standalone and cluster setups.
- Open-source under a BSD license.
- Analysis

- Analysis of file content exchanged over application-layer protocols, including MD5/SHA1 computation for fingerprinting.
- Comprehensive IPv6 support.
- Tunnel detection and analysis (including Ayiya, Teredo, GTPv1). Bro decapsulates the tunnels and then proceeds to analyze their content as if no tunnel was in place.
- Extensive sanity checks during protocol analysis.
- Support for IDS-style pattern matching.
- Scripting Language
- Turing-complete language for expression arbitrary analysis tasks.
- Event-based programming model.
- Domain-specific data types such as IP addresses (transparently handling both IPv4 and IPv6), port numbers, and timers.
- Extensive support for tracking and managing network state over time.
- Interfacing
- Default output to well-structured ASCII logs.
- Alternative backends for ElasticSearch and DataSeries. Further database interfaces in preparation.
- Real-time integration of external input into analyses. Live database input in preparation.
- External C library for exchanging Bro events with external programs. Comes with Perl, Python, and Ruby bindings.

Hardening Wordpress Security By Monitoring Malicious User Activities
WordPress has become the most popular content management system; it drives more than 20% of the websites on the internet. Such popularity has also made WordPress a very popular hacker target, and as a matter of fact one can find ample of information about WordPress security. But although there is a lot of information about WordPress security, the WordPress security community is missing out something very important; WordPress monitoring and logging!
Why Logging and Monitoring is Important
Operating systems, network hardware and software have got log everything that is happening in a lo file or some sort of auditing database. For example Windows has the Event Viewer and Linux / Unix operating systems use syslog. From time to time administrators analyse logs to ensure that everything is working properly and that everyone is playing by the rules, i.e. not trying to tamper the system. In fact Analysing logs helps administrators identify any suspicious behaviour, hence preventing malicious attacks.
Even in case of an attack, logs come in handy. For example if a website or server is hacked, administrators analyse the logs to track back the attack and identify the security hole the malicious hacker exploited to hack the website or server. Once the security hole has been identified administrators can work with the development team or vendor to close down the security hole to ensure that it cannot be exploited again in the future.
Management also find logs very handy because it allows them to track and monitory user activity and productivity. Monitoring of system and user activity is a must to ensure both user productivity and the security of the system.
Monitor WordPress Sites Activity
Like with any other system, keeping an audit log of the activity WordPress sites and blogs, especially WordPress multisite installations is a must if you want to ensure the security of WordPress, and also user productivity.WP Security Audit Log
WP Security Audit Log is a free WordPress monitoring plugin that tracks all activity on WordPress and WordPress multisite websites thus enabling administrators and WordPress owners keep track of all that is happening on their WordPress to identify any suspicious behaviour and prevent malicious hack attacks.WP Security Audit Log logs an alert each time a user logs in or out and creates, modifies or deletes existing content such as blog posts, pages and custom post types. What makes WP Security Audit Log better than other monitoring and auditing plugin are its comprehensive WordPress alerts. For example if some content is changed it does not simply issue a generic “content has been modified” alert, but specifically reports what has changed. For example it raises a different alert if a URL or category has changed, if the blog status or visibility has changed, if the author, date, page template or parent has changed and much more.
Apart from content activity it also monitors the WordPress installation and system. Below is a list of some of the activity that WP Security Audit Log monitors:
- User profile changes; such as email, role and password changes
- Widgets changes; for example an alert is generated if new widget is created, existing widgets are moved, modified or deleted
- Plugin changes; an alert is generated if a new plugin is installed or if an existing one has been updated or uninstalled
- Themes monitoring; new theme is installed or activated
- WordPress system changes; WP Security Audit Log also monitors WordPress updates, permalinks changes, administrator notification email change, default user role etc
- Source code changes; an alert is raised if plugin or theme files is modified
Administrators can use the Audit Log Viewer, shown in the below screenshot to view all the WordPress security alerts generated by the plugin while monitoring WordPress.
Detailed WordPress Alerts
As per the below screenshot each WordPress alert generated by the plugin includes information about the actual change being reported, the user’s WordPress username, avatar and role, the source IP, the date and time.It is also possible to enable the Data Inspector from the plugin’s settings to get more details about the reported alert, such as the file triggering the alert, the user’s User Agent string etc.
From the plugin settings administrators can also enable PHP alerts, so the plugin reports any PHP errors and warnings therefore enabling administrators to also keep track of any PHP problems, typically created when a WordPress website is hacked.
It is also possible to disable any of the alerts, if for example you do not want to be alerted each time a user logs in or out, as seen in the below screenshot.
Delegation of WordPress Security Monitoring
By default only administrators can view the alerts, switch on or off alerts, modify alerts pruning etc. Though it is also possible to allow specific users or roles to view the alerts or modify any of the plugin settings as seen from the below screenshot.WordPress Administrators Should Use WP Security Audit Log
It is impossible to track user activity and productivity, and to ensure the security of your WordPress unless you have WP Security Audit Log; therefore such plugin come in very handy especially if you have hundreds of users on your WordPress, or if you have multiple websites and a large number of users on a WordPress multisite installation.Download WP Security Audit Log from the Official WordPress plugin repository and visit the official WP Security audit Log plugin page for more information about the plugin.

IF YOU'RE PISSED THAT A BURGER-FLIPPER GOT A RAISE, YEWWW MIGHT BE A WINGNUT.
Aargh blaargh from "professional comedian and writer" Stephen Kruiser over Seattle raising its minimum wage to $15:
Maybe this'll be the tipping point for that great blue-red inversion of economic energy Joel Kotkin, Rick Perry, and other great minds are always predicting.
Of course it'll take a while:
As Steve Allen first said and I like to repeat, how ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen the farm?
UPDATE. Some commenters are wondering what kind of capitalist announces his desire to keep workers' wages down. I doubt Kruiser really qualifies as a capitalist, though maybe he employs a maid. Neither do the wingnut-welfare cases at libertarian flagship Reason qualify, which explains this headline: "Seattle Prepares for Robot Revolution by Setting $15 Minimum Wage." At first I thought they meant that granting peons an almost-living wage would speed the rise of robot workers, though bosses need no such provocation and in fact already employ robots as soon as they can get them. You aren't going to slow them down by pretending to be happy with shit wages.
Then I realized it was a revenge fantasy.
Interesting too that they found a cleaning lady who allegedly had a "401k, health insurance, paid holiday, and vacation" only to see it see it ruined by the high-minimum-wage commissars. Maybe the poor woman should get out of that line of work and start driving a cab.
Hippie infestation...
Apparently unaware that it doesn’t have the weather advantages that other places pricing themselves out of existence do (Los Angeles, anyone?), Seattle seems to be ready to set a record for how many businesses it can ruin.
The earnest idiots who whip up this minimum wage frenzy... "...BECAUSE FAIRNESS.” No discussion of the fact that an entry level, part time job isn’t supposed to be your adult income wage for life.
What they don’t discuss is just how stifling this progressive feel good, math-hating nonsense is to current and aspiring small business owners.
Because they want to drive as many people as they can into financial hell.Seriously, what is he bitching about? He believes in the market, right? So this foolish decision will cause businesses to abandon commie Seattle for the red-state hinterland, and capitalism wins! I can see those bright folks currently working at Seattle-based businesses like Amazon, Starbucks, Safeco, Nordstrom, Cray, Corbis, et alia, not to mention the venture capitalists and internet jockeys, and the hipster entrepreneurs of Sub Pop and Babeland, deciding they've had enough of this command economy and running off to Fritters, Alabama or North Dakota to enjoy all the freedom and fracking.
Maybe this'll be the tipping point for that great blue-red inversion of economic energy Joel Kotkin, Rick Perry, and other great minds are always predicting.

#Lubuntu 14.04 LTS #review
Minimalist distros are an important option for many Linux users. Not everyone wants tons of desktop glitz and zillions of bells and whistles. Lubuntu has always been a terrific option for minimalists who prefer to stay within the Ubuntu family. Now Lubuntu 14.04 LTS is available and it follows in the footsteps of previous releases by providing a high-quality desktop distro that is light-weight and fast.
You should know that LTS releases like Lubuntu 14.04 are mostly geared toward providing a long term, very stable desktop. So this release is not chock-full of new features. Don’t let that disappoint you though because Lubuntu 14.04 is still worth upgrading to if you are using an earlier version of it.
If you are totally new to Lubuntu you can get a pretty good overview of it, along with a history of prior releases on the Lubuntu page at Wikipedia:
Lubuntu is a lightweight Linux operating system based on Ubuntu but using the LXDE desktop environment in place of Ubuntu’s Unity shell and GNOME desktop. LXDE is touted as being “lighter, less resource hungry and more energy-efficient”.Like Xubuntu, Lubuntu is intended to be a low-system-requirement, low-RAM environment for netbooks, mobile devices, and older PCs. Tests show it can use half as much RAM as Xubuntu, making it an attractive choice for installing on older hardware being refurbished for charitable distribution.
What’s new in Lubuntu 14.04 LTS
Here’s a sample of the new features in this release:

LTS support (three years)
PCManFM 1.2.0
Lxsession-default-apps has a new user interface
Artwork update (themes and icons have been updated)

The LTS support will be quite useful for those who want to upgrade to a distro and then stick with it for a long time. Distrohoppers will probably not care about that though, since they prefer to hop around from distro to distro regularly.
PCManFM is a light-weight file manager and version 1.2.0 includes a dual pane view, menu editing and folder settings (among other features). There’s quite a bit in PCManFM 1.2.0, far more than I can cover here. Be sure to read through the release announcementfor more details on the changes and new features. It’s definitely worth checking out if you want to know more about what’s in PCManFM 1.2.0.
Lubuntu 14.04 LTS also comes with new artwork that should please most users. This release includes updates to the GTK and icon themes, along with some pretty new wallpapers to spruce up the Lubuntu desktop.
Lubuntu 14.04 LTS download and install
You can download Lubuntu 14.04 LTS from this page. You can get Lubuntu 14.04 LTS in 32-bit or 64-bit versions. You can check it out as a live distro before actually doing an install. The install itself is quite easy and fast, as is the case with Ubuntu and all of its various spins. You should not have any problems even if you are totally new to Linux.

Linux software included in Lubuntu 14.04 LTS

Final thoughts about Lubuntu 14.04 LTS
Lubuntu 14.04 LTS performed very well for me. It was fast and quite stable while I was using it. I had no problems running any applications and the system as a whole lived up to its reputation as a great choice for Ubuntu minimalists. Overall, I think most current Lubuntu users are going to enjoy this upgrade.
If you haven’t used Lubuntu before but you are curious about it, I recommend downloading it and giving it a try. The LXDE desktop environment is very different than Unity for Ubuntu or GNOME 3 in Ubuntu GNOME. It’s a traditional desktop which means it’s very quick and easy to learn how to use. And if you are someone that doesn’t like Unity or GNOME then LXDE in Lubuntu 14.04 LTS might be just what the doctor ordered. You’ll get all the benefits of Ubuntu, but without the discomfort of the Unity interface.
Lubuntu 14.04 LTS is suitable for beginner, intermediate or advanced Linux users.
