BLACA news 1BLACA, a.k.a. the British Literary and Artistic Copyright Association, is the British cell of the Association Littéraire et Artistique Nationale (ALAI). BLACA meets in the early evening of the second Thursday of the uneven numbered months, getting together for drinks at 5.45pm and dispersing, after an illuminating talk and an enjoyable discussion, at around 7.15pm. The venue is the office of London-based law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner, here.
14 September's meeting is a Panel Discussion on Law and Policy behind Technological Protection Measures. According to chairman Uma Suthersanen,
"For all interested in legal regulation of digital technology, technological protection measures, IPRs and the politics of it all, the British Literary and Artistic Copyright Association (www.blaca.org.uk, and which is part of ALAI) is having a 4 member panel debating on whether TPMs are of no use, and whether we should seriously lobby the EC and the UK Patent Office in introducing the private copying levy."The panel consists of Tanya Aplin (Kings College, London), Florian Koempel (British Music Rights), Brigitte Lindner (Registered European Lawyer, Searle Court), Ted Shapiro (Vice President, Motion Pictures Association) and Ian Brown (Foundation for Information Policy Research). Joint chairs will be (probably) Uma Suthersanen (QM) and Lionel Bently (Cambridge).
