MAIT aims at Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

The Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT) hosted the ceremonial "labelling" of the energy-efficient label programme launched by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power. With this, BEE has formally set energy efficiency standards and labelling programme for computer notebooks and IT products in India.

The models labelled during the launch were HP notebook 6440b, HP notebook Pavilion dv6-3208 tx and HCL Me series 54 laptop. Dell and Chirag Computers also announced their BEE- compliant laptops. HP and Canon also respectively announced that they would support the emerging BEE standard for OA and printers. In fact, HP 1025 LJ printer and Canon LJ LBP 7200cd on display were BEE compliant and would be the first set of printers to get the BEE label in the country.

To make it a more remarkable one, MAIT hosted an industry-interactive programme "An Idea called India", which was graced by Shri P Umashankar, Hon'ble Secretary - Power. While acknowledging the newly set BEE energy standards for notebooks, Shri Umashankar said, "Energy efficiency standards for IT products set by BEE is a major step towards enhancing the industry's efforts towards sustainability. The BEE-compliant products will also ensure cost-effectiveness and optimum utility, along with the energy conservation."

“The country’s IT sector has played a leading role in implementation of green initiatives,” said Sandeep Nair, President, MAIT, “and MAIT was working with the government to drive all inclusive participation to regulations that were harmonized with global principles and supply chains.”

The programme also felicitated the recent Padma award-winners from the IT industry, namely, Azim H. Premji (Wipro) for receiving the Padma Vibhushan, and the three Padma Bhushan awardees - Ajai Chowdhry (HCL), R.S.Pawar (NIIT) and S. Gopalakrishnan (Infosys).

A panel discussion on "An Idea called India", was also held. Eminent industry leaders participating in the discussion were Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman & CEO, HCL Infosystems; R. S. Pawar, Founder & Chairman, NIIT; Pradeep Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director of Cyber Media; and Alok Bharadwaj, Sr. Vice-President, Canon India.
