Google buys 1,000+ IBM Patents

Google has now reportedly purchased more than 1,000 technology patents from IBM with a target to shore up its defences against suits by other technology companies. The search giant tried to acquire patents from bankrupt phone equipment maker Nortel Networks in April but lost its bidding war with Apple, Microsoft and other rivals. With a new wave of patent battles raging between the likes of Apple and Samsung, Google appears to be shoring up its defenses to protect its intellectual property-particularly potential legal challenges to its Android mobile operating system that runs smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices.

The SEO by the Sea search engine optimization blog first reported Google's acquisition of 1,030 IBM patents and offers up a sampling of some of the search-related patents now in Google's list of properties. While Google's general consul Kent Walker this week bemoaned the rise of so called "patent trolling" among Silicon Valley tech firms, the company has also made it clear that it feels its only recourse against potential patent lawsuits is to acquire some for itself.
