World's First Ever Meter Hacking Published

Working of Meter Hacking Framework
It has been fairly considered that a researcher specializing in smart grids has released an open source tool to access the security of smart meters. The dubbed 'Termineter' and the framework would allow users, such as grid operators and its owner to test smart meters possible effects.

The Termineter device uses the port connection that keeps meter's optical infra-red interfaced and gives user access to smart inter connections of meter. It claims will benefit the users and let security experts and testers to verify the security of electric utility smart meters that are installed in millions of homes around the country now a days.

The electricity meters are big considerate of sensitive issues as they are used for more than taxing and demand estimation. The meters are strong hold for cops as they detect unusual spikes in consumption and identify households that illegally farm marijuana. Well now basically what is a Termineter ? It's a framework written in Python to provide a platform for the security testing of smart meters. Termineter communicates with Smart Meters via a connection using an ANSI type-2 optical probe with a serial interface.

The basic necessity of this article is to publicly promote security awareness for Smart Meters and provide a tool that brings basic testing capabilities to the community and meter manufactures so that security can be improved. Power companies can use the framework to identify the general flaws of frauds and possible chances of harm.

Users must have general knowledge of meter's internal workings in order to use Termineter proficiently.
