Speciality Italian goods include pane carasau (paper-thin Sardinian crispbread) and Sicilian and Puglian quince pastes.

18 Brewer St, W1R 3FS (7437 6482). Piccadilly Circus tube.An iconic family-run deli that has been around for more than half a century. The 1950s green-tlled frontage is unmissable; pop in for the excellent selection of deli meats, fresh pastas and marinated globe artichokes.
Luigi's Delicatessen

Fulham Broadway tube.A great shop for seasoned cooks as well as those who just want a quick meal – Luigi’s has an excellent range of basic and speciality ingredients as well as own-made cooked dishes and free-range Italian chicken. The lardo di colonnata (seasoned rendered pork fat) is a naughty but very nice treat – it’s perfect thinly sliced and served on toasted bread.
La Salumeria
184 Trafalgar Rd, SE10 9TZ (8305 2433). Maze Hill rail.A local deli, far flung from the tourist reaches of Greenwich. Refurbished earlier in the year to incorporate a café, there’s a thoroughly likeable buzz about it. Visit to load up on various pastas, anchovies, capers, sun-dried tomatoes and Italian wines.

Brixton tube/rail.This organic food shop is owned by Giuseppe Mascoli and Bridget Hugo, the pair behind Brixton’s favourite pizzeria, Franco Manca. Quality (if pricey) Italian ingredients abound: buttery olives, fine olive oils, organic pasta, mozzarella and sausages.
