The Selling Of Used Books - Entertainment
Individuals did not always see purchasing used books as the "in thing," and were so embarrassed about the idea that they would be seen near a used book store. So for many years used book stores were not at all popular and were considered to be unacceptable by many within society.
However, those that spent their time looking down on others could afford too, but those who could not were enjoying the benefits that the used book stores offered. Many students were constant customers at the used book stores at first and not only did they purchase their textbooks there, but they also sold their used books there as well. They were able to get rid of their old books by either receiving cash or even an in store credit which they could use on other used books that they would need for school. As the popularity of used book stores increased so did the number and variety of these stores that became available to the public.
Soon there was a growing market where businesses and individuals all over the world were selling used books, and making a profit as well. No longer was purchasing used books looked down upon or as being unacceptable, but instead it had become much more practical than purchasing new books at the larger retail book stores. In fact, selling used books became so popular that the larger retail book stores began adding used books sections in their own stores to compensate for the business they were losing to the used books.
The popularity of selling used books has exploded onto the market with its demand as individuals search for used copies of classic favorites, rare classics, out of print titles, and recent bestsellers. All of these factors are causing used book stores to come up with new and faster ways of acquiring used books. The sales of used books have been on the rise throughout our nation and in various other parts of the world for the past three years.
With used books booming up the demand of sales in book market, store owners are forced to find new ways to acquire inventory, because of their growing competition. One of the largest chains of used books stores within the United States is based in Seattle. This stores will purchase up to five thousand copies of used books a day from their customers, but with their nine locations and on-line book store they sell up to ten times that some days. Many of their customers are other owners of used book stores as well.
I have a friend who is lucky enough to live in the Seattle area and goes to this book store and she calls me each time she returns. She always brags about the wonderful treasures that she has been able to locate and ambiance that she feels while she is there. I swear she would live there if her husband would let her. The Seattle are has several used book stores, but she will only go to this one, which is her favorite of all the rest. She says they have a more complete collection of used books and they never turn her down when she asks for store credit for returning the ones she has brought in to sell.
