DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release

Requirements 7-Zip, NPP/Notepad++ or other text editor, PortableApps.com Launcher Generator/PAL, PortableApps.com Installer/PAI.

1. Get the latest portable app. template, and extract the content with 7-Zip.
2. Get the latest Skype release.
3. Put the installer in the same folder as the extracted template, in our example C:\0TEST, then extract the installer by following this guide.
4. Move the extracted {app} folder to C:\0TEST\SkypePortable\App folder then rename it to Skype
   
5. Browse to SkypePortable\App\AppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. 8.42.0.60,

    DisplayVersion=8.42.0.60
   

6. Run PAL, paste the template folder address C:\0TEST\SkypePortable, and click Go—a new launcher will be created,
   
7. Test the new launchers by following this guide.
8. When all is OK, then delete the SkypePortable\Data folder and run PAI, paste the package folder address C:\0TEST\SkypePortable, and click Go—to create the installer package.
   
9. Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Don't forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade :)
10. If you find any changes that's not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support.

Quick and Dirty Update

1. Make sure you exit Skype portable cleanly—check that no PortableApps.comLauncherRuntimeData-SkypePortable.ini file in the Data folder.
2. Delete your current App\Skype folder.
3. Follow step 2-4 of the "DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release" above.
4. Done.

Portability Notes

• Skype 8 or newer writes non essential data to Windows registry and stores its data in Windows data folders.
• Skype 7 or older writes non essential data to Windows registry and data folders while running.
• Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
