Cinnamon 2.6.8 Desktop is out, you can install on Linux Mint 17 Qiana

Cinnamon is an open source project that provides users with a full featured desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating systems. It is a fork of the GNOME Shell user interface distributed with the GNOME project. It has been designed from the ground up to provide users with a traditional, yet advanced and modern graphical session for their Linux-based operating systems. It's usually deployed on the Linux Mint distribution.

Designed for Linux Mint

Actually, the Cinnamon project has been developed by the same team of hard working people behind the Linux Mint project, out of frustration with the GNOME desktop environment. However, the desktop environment is not attached to the Linux Mint distribution, as it can be easily installed on other open source GNU/Linux operating system, straight from their default software repositories or using third-party ones provided by the community.

The latest version available is Cinnamon 2.6.8, which brings only the below fixes and changes:

  • Fix typo in doc
  • Revert “Menu applet: Removed context menu on recent items (overkill and we’re really struggling with performance at startup)”
  • Power applet: Fixed panel icon not getting refreshed after falling back to brightness icon (after a suspend/resume for instance)
  • Power Settings: Added missing “self” in front of function
  • Background settings: Don’t fail when locale isn’t as expected (fixes “LC_ALL=C cinnamon-settings backgrounds”)
  • Display Volume OSD on primary monitor correctly
  • windowManager.js: fix typo;
  • panel.js: fix panel autohide glitch
  • applet.js: don’t use deprecated MenuItem
  • windowManager.js: Fix window dimming behavior for attached modal dialogs.
  • menu applet: clean up panel icon section – having no icon is a valid option, and it wasn’t working.
  • cs_startup: Let double-clicking entry open the edit dialog.
  • Fix typo
  • remove empty tooltip
