Chromium Portable (web browser) (32/64 bit)
"Chrome is viewed by many to have a reputation for security, but a lot of security experts actually take the view that Chromium is superior in this respect... 'Chrome's code has to be able to tie into Flash Player, for instance,'... 'So more code is involved to integrate with other third-party products. This all introduces more complexities and more code paths.'" —Jack M. Germain, LinuxInsider.com (Nov 26, 2013 5:00 AM PT)Chromium is the open-source web browser project from which Google Chrome draws its source code. The browsers share the majority of code and features, though there are some minor differences in features and they have different licensing.

Release Details
Developer: The Chromium Authors, chromium.woolyss.com & thumbapps.orgSingle Bit and Dual Bit Releases: You can use these releases interchangeably, both use the same data profile. You can upgrade to the single bit release, or later upgrade it to the dual bit release, or vice versa. The single bit (32 bit) is for those who want to save space. The dual bit (32/64 bit) is for users who want to use the 64 bit version of the application on Windows 64 bit. And since it also has 32 bit application binaries, it will still run on Windows 32 bit.
Portable plugins and other NPAPI-friendly browsers: Flash player plugin included or get the latest Adobe Flash Player plugin portable. If you still need NPAPI plugins (Java, Silverlight, etc.) install the IE Tab addon or use
- 32 bit: Citrio, Google Chrome, Maelstrom, PirateSnoop (Iron), Sleipnir, UC Browser for PC (Chromium-based), pcxFirefox (Firefox-based), or
- 64 bit: pcxFirefox, Waterfox.
Requirements: Windows 7 or later
License: Open source—Licensing in Chromium OS
Source: Included in the package (.ini, .nsh files)
DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release
Requirements 7-Zip, NPP/Notepad++ or other text editor, PortableApps.com Launcher Generator/PAL, PortableApps.com Installer/PAI.- We'll use the 32/64 bit edition as example, you can infer from this example to upgrade the 32 bit only edition.
- Get the latest portable app. template, and extract the content with 7-Zip.
- Get the latest:
- Chromium release by The Chromium Authors, both the 32/64 bit "Installer"—not "Archive" or "Portable",
- Adobe Flash Player portable release,
- belaviyo's native client for Windows release.
- Put it in the same folder as the extracted template, in our example C:\0TEST.
- Open the 32 bit installer with 7-Zip → browse into chrome.7z\Chrome-bin package inside → extract all of its contents to ChromiumPortable_dev _3264\App\Chrome-bin folder,
Do the same thing with the 64 bit installer but now to ChromiumPortable_dev _3264\App\Chrome-bin64 folder. - Open the Flash Player package with 7-Zip → browse into Pepper32 folder then extract pepflashplayer.dll to App\Chrome-bin\plugins folder,
Then extract the 64 bit Flash Player in Pepper64 to App\Chrome-bin64\plugins folder. - Extract the Windows native client package with 7-Zip to App\windows-native-client folder,
- Browse to ChromiumPortable_dev _3264\App\AppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. 66.0.3339.0 not just 66.0.3339,
[Version]
PackageVersion=66.0.3339.0
DisplayVersion=66.0.3339.0 (32/64 bit)
- Run PAL, paste the template folder address C:\0TEST\ChromiumPortable_dev _3264, and click Go—a new launcher will be created,
- Test the new launchers by following this guide.
- When all is OK, then delete the ChromiumPortable_dev _3264\Data folder, ChromiumPortable.ini, and run PAI, paste the package folder address C:\0TEST\ChromiumPortable_dev _3264, and click Go—to create the installer package.
- Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Don't forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade :)
- If you find any changes that's not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support.
Portability Notes
- Chromium writes non essential data to Windows registry and data folder while running.
- Flash Player and IE Tab addon—if installed—writes to Windows registry and data folder while running.
- Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
