What is Port Forwarding??

In computer networking, port forwarding or port mapping is an application of network address translation (NAT) that redirects a communication request from one address and port number combination to another while the packets are traversing a network gateway, such as a router or firewall.

So lets get started with port forwarding a specific port..
I am using a TP-LINK TL-WR740N router..

Step 1:
Before port forwarding you need to  your local ip from dynamic ip to static ip and to do that refer my article on Setting up a Static IP address HERE!!

Step 2:
After Setting up a , login into your Router page.. As Follows:
Open any web browser and type your internal IP address(mine is 192.168.0.1 urs might be      192.168.1.1)  and press enter

The window pops up asking for user name and password:
The default username and password are : Username: admin
Password: password (or) admin

Step 3:
You will be brought to router’s configuration page and below is the screenshot of my router’s page:

Now click on Forwarding (or) Virtual Servers as it differs on every router page..
Then click on add
You will see something similar to this:
How to do Port Forwarding
Enter your Service Port and Internal Port that you want to forward.
Then Enter the Local IP address of the machine or device in your network.
Choose ALL in the Protocol option.
After everything is set, save and close the browser.

Step 4:
Now the final step is to check whether the port we have entered is open or not, i.e whether it is forwarded or not..
To do that download a tool that checks for whether the port is open or not,

Install and open the tool which looks as:

Then click on Port Checker and Enter the port that you want to check!!
(The port that I want to check is 8443)

As you can seen in the above screenshot the port is open, i.e it is successfully forwarded.. :D

If you have set up double router and wondering how to forward a specific port, then check my another article on Double Router Port Forwarding.

Thank you!!
