Colombia, Panama discuss border security post-FARC
The potential demobilisation of Colombia’s FARC guerrilla group and its possible consequences for transnational crime around the Darien Gap on Colombia and Panama’s border was a key topic during the latest Binational Border Commission’s (COMBIFRON’s) meeting, highlighting the difficult peacetime work ahead.
COMBIFRON’s 15th meeting began the week commencing 14 March, and was attended by Panama’s Minister for Public Security, Rodolfo Aguilera, and the executive secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rolando López, with Army Major General Mauricio Zuñiga representing Colombia.
The Darien Gap is known for its inaccessible vegetation, and the area has been utilised by the FARC and other criminal groups for drug and human trafficking operations.
