US defense secretary and Defence Minitser onboard INS Vikramaditya
Dr Ashton Carter, Secretary of Defense, USA, accompanied by the US Ambassador to India, Richard Verma and other high ranking US officials, visited Karwar Naval Base and INS Vikramaditya, the flagship of the Indian Navy, on Monday.
On arrival at INS Kadamba helipad, he was welcomed by the Hon’ble defense minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar, Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Vice Admiral MS Pawar, Director General Seabird and Rear Admiral RJ Nadkarni, Flag Officer Commanding Karnataka Naval area.
Dr Carter was briefed on the development of the Naval Base under Project Seabird, specially highlighting the green initiatives undertaken by the Navy to make it a pristine and environmentally friendly base. The secretary of defense also visited the Naval Ship Repair Yard and was shown the technical capabilities for repair and maintenance of ships at Karwar, including the state of the art ship lift system, used for docking ships.
The US delegation thereafter went on board INS Vikramaditya, where they were taken for a guided tour of the ship, followed by a presentation on her role and capabilities by the Commanding Officer, Capt K Swaminathan.
