Kali linux not connecting "connect: Network is unreachable"

My kali machine was no longer connecting to the internal network after a system upgrade.
The IP address was appearing in ifconfig -a command but the  route -n was missing the gateway specs (see example in the source link)

Temporary solution:

route add default gw  eth0
