Zentyal Server 5.0 is Released, based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial) and comes with the latest versions of all the integrated software
José Antonio Calvo has announced the release of Zentyal Server 5.0, a major new version of the project's Ubuntu-based distribution designed for small business servers. This is Zentyal's first build based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Zentyal (previously known as eBox Platform) is an open source and full-featured Linux server operating system dedicated to small and medium businesses. It is based on Ubuntu Linux. It can be transformed into a single, easy-to-use Linux platform to handle all your network services. Additionally, it can act as a UCS (Unified Communications Server), office server, infrastructure manager, gateway, or Unified Threat Management (UTM).
A communications server
As a communications server, Zentyal includes a mail server, groupware and instant messaging components. As an office server, it provides a LDAP directory server, file sharing & domain services, printer sharing, and backup systems. Moreover, when used as a gateway, Zentyal offers transparent caching, traffic shaping, load balancing, and content filtering. The UTM (Unified Threat Management) part includes VPN management, an advanced firewall, Intrusion Detection System (IDS), mail filter, and antivirus components.
Zentyal Server 5.0 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial) and comes with the latest versions of all the integrated software. New features and improvements include:
Samba 4.5.1:
- Latest released version of Samba directly from upstream, without any custom patch by Zentyal.
- Comes with all the fixes in the Samba project since Samba 4.3, which are many, specially on the replication code.
- The Zentyal integration code has been rewritten to no longer need the custom patches, this will result in more stability and maintainability, getting newer versions quicker.
- NSS/PAM is now managed with winbind instead of sssd, which is the recommended way.
SOGo 3.2.1:
- New UI using modern web technologies with improved look&feel, visual effects and usability.
- Lots of fixes and improvements on ActiveSync implementation.
New HTTP Proxy module
Daemon management uses systemd instead of upstart.
