Calibre is an open source e-book library management application designed for the 21th century, for the digital world that were are living in right now. It lets users to manipulate digital books in any way possible. It helps users to easily read ebooks on their personal computer, convert ebooks from one format to another, create electronic books based on recipes of your very own ideas.
Features at a glance
The software can download news from a sleuth of various sources, and comes with a content server for online access. Syncing ebooks to a supported mobile reader device is also possible with Calibre. E-book library management is the the main component of the application, displayed every time you open the application. From here, you can convert and organize e-books in a simple manner. It imports and exports many ebook formats, including ePub, MOBI, AZW, DOC, XML, etc. Just like any other software that can be extended via plugins, Calibre features an internal collection of add-ons, which provide support for editing metadata of ebooks, or add support for various ebook readers.
Setting Up Calibre:
Calibre setup file can be downloaded for free via internet. On opening the file, the installation process will begin and you can easily install the software through its installation wizard. When running the software for the very first time, you must specify certain settings in Welcome wizard so it can work based on your preferences. It is a multilingual tool and you can choose any of the available languages as default. Also choose the folder where books should be saved. In the next window, choose your eBook device and its manufacturer and then the software will be ready to use.
eBook Manager:
You can manage all your eBooks by adding them to Calibre library. It displays the list of all files it contains along with their important details including book name, author, date, size, rating, tag, series and publisher. These details can be edited or hidden through suitable options. If you wish to find particular book then you can search for it by typing its name in search bar or looking through well-maintained categories of Authors, Languages, Series, Formats, Publisher, Rating, News, Tags and Identifiers. For viewing only selected book list, you can avail the benefits of Virtual library.
eBook Conversion:
The stored books can be converted to supported formats with the help of conversion tools. The books are usually present in PDF format and you can convert them into EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, DOCX, PMLZ, FB2, ZIP, HTMLZ, LRF, PDB, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ and LIT formats for using them on different devices or applications. Various other settings can also be adjusted for output files. You can edit file metadata, generate index, improvise layout and style, enable heuristic processing, find and replace content, choose page description, apply page breaks and use debugging for accurate conversion.
Installation instructions:
For Arch Linux, Manjaro, ArchBang, Antergos and other Arch Linux derivative systems, Calibre is available via AUR, so, in order to install it, do:$ sudo pacman -Sy yaourt
$ sudo yaourt calibre
For other Linux systems, including Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pinguy OS, Elementary OS, Deepin, Peppermint, LXLE, Linux Lite, Debian, Robolinux, SparkyLinux, Fedora, CentOS, OpenSUSE, Mageia or OpenMandriva (and others), the developers have created an installation script that can be triggered via the below oneliner:
$ sudo su
