Install VLC 2.2.5 in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 17.04 and LInux Mint
VLC Media Player (formerly VideoLAN Client) is an open source and highly portable multimedia player application that integrates support for many audio and video formats, as well as DVDs, VCDs, and several streaming protocols. In addition to those, VLC reads Audio-CDs, DVB-S/C/T streams, MPEG encoding cards, and video acquisition from a supported V4L (Video4Linux) device.
A video streaming app
The application can be used as a server to stream video in UDP/RTP Unicast or Multicast on IPv4 and IPv6 high-bandwidth networks. It also supports the HTTP, FTP and MMS protocols. Users will be able to use different video filters on movies, including deinterlace, crop, image wall, brightness, saturation, contrast, rotate, upside down, and logo overlay.
Supports a wide range of multimedia file formats
Among the input formats supported by VLC Media Player, we can mention MPEG ES/PS/TS/PVA/MP3, AVI, ASF/WMV/WMA, OGG/OGM/Annodex, MP4/MOV/3GPP, Matroska (MKV), WAV, DTS WAV, Raw DV, Raw AAC, Raw AC3/a52 audio, Raw DTS audio, and FLAC audio. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the vlc package. Like this:

Enter your password :
Delete old vlc-noc, like this :
sudo apt remove vlc vlc-nox
Update ubuntu repository and install new version of Vlc media player :
sudo apt update
sudo apt install vlc
After installation is finished, open vlc media player and search on ubuntu dasboard menu :
How to delete :
to delete ppa vlc media player, open terminal and follow this command :
sudo apt install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:jonathonf/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get remove vlc
