Biomimicry Bioneers camp inspires young visitors to learn by doing #Biomimicry
The Madison Children’s Museum has brought back its Biomimicry Bioneers Camp as part of its nod to Frank Lloyd Wright’s inspiration from the natural world.
It’s one of three summer camps connected to the museum exhibit “From Coops to Cathedrals: Nature, Childhood and the Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright,” said Kia Karlen, the museum’s education director. The exhibit inspires young visitors to experiment, tinker, design, play and “learn by doing” as Wright did, and is part of the museum’s celebration of the architect’s 150th birthday.
The camp, which explores how design mimics nature, focuses on the science called biomimicry, which looks to nature for inspiration and innovations for invention, architecture and design.
As part of last week’s three-day camp for grades 1-5, the campers explored elements of nature and used what they found to invent and design structures.
“We aren’t just trying to create something new,” said student Henry Schmitt about the creations. “If you try to base it on nature, you’ll have a stronger base.”
One of the activities at the camp was a biomimicry scavenger hunt, in which the campers looked for things in the museum that mimic nature before they made their own structures out of straw, clay and sand.
