AWS Changes Service Agreement to Protect Users' Intellectual Property (07/17/2017)
Two recent changes to the Amazon Web Services' (AWS) user agreement provide intellectual property protections to the company's users. First, AWS has dropped a contentious clause that required customers to agree that they would never file a patent infringement lawsuit against the cloud vendor. According to Geekwire, the language appeared to give AWS the right to contest any patent lawsuit filed by current or former customers. "Depending on how a court interpreted the clause, this could have allowed AWS to expand into virtually any customer's market without having to worry if it was violating patents, and prevent customers from asserting their patents against a hypothetical suit filed by AWS." In a second development, the company has added a new clause that pledges assistance to any client sued for patent infringement over services that run on AWS. Microsoft instituted a similar policy covering its cloud customers earlier in the year. Geekwire notes that "Steps like this will make life a little harder for cloud patent trolls, who will now have to go directly after the all big public cloud companies and their well-funded legal departments if they want to sue a software company using public cloud infrastructure."

AWS Improves Sign-In Options (07/17/2017)
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is making it easier for users to sign in to an AWS account. Until now, customers had been required to use an account-specific URL. With the change, both root users and AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) users will be able to sign in from the AWS Management Console's home page. Root users will enter their email address and password, while IAM users can enter their account ID (or account alias) and then their user name and password. With these changes, updates to password managers may be required so that they work with the new sign-in experience. The move to user-generated log-ins is being seen as a sign that use of AWS is becoming more widespread in companies to the point that admins are no longer the central point of access and users are interacting more and more directly with the service.
