The Making of a Protocol Droid
The most well known protocol droid in the Star Wars universe is easily C-3PO. However, he’s not the only one of his kind. The comics have introduced Triple Zero, a.k.a. 0-0-0. Ken LeSaint decided to build a replica of the character. He debuted it at Star Wars Celebration Orlando in April and has documented the entire build process at a website devoted to the project. It’s an excellent resource to learn more about how much goes into constructing a wearable droid costume from design and drafting to rigging the gloves and belly wires. Ken says:
The belly wires were constructed with S’getti brand rubber crafting lace. They call it “S’getti” because it has the same dimensions and flexibility to that of spaghetti. You can find spools of this on Amazon. They come in 50 yd spools and in different colors. A trip to Walmart got me a 250 count pack of zip, cable ties, (in black) and a package of safety pins. This was all I needed to make the belly wires.
