Hey World! My channel is one year old! To celebrate, I revamped my BB-8 Pumpkin Droid make from last Halloween and turned it into a birthday cake. And Star Wars, always Star Wars.
I always wanted to make a ball cake but I didn’t know how. BUT Ro Ro from Nerdy Nummies just launched a baking line which includes a Ball Pan. I followed along her Pokemon Poke Ball Cake Video and made one!
For the build, I wrote a python script that turns a servo and move BB-8’s head, turns on the LEDs, and makes BB-8 sounds. The script is run in a Raspberry Pi Zero W and is powered by a battery pack. I only needed to add a speaker for the sounds. BB-8 is activated by a button.
I got all the BB-8 parts from a pumpkin kit last Halloween. To put it together, I drilled a hole in the head to run the wires from the leds. Then I set the servo in a half paper cup which sits in the middle of the cake. I glued the servo to the head and ran all the wires through a straw inside the cake. I put the Raspberry Pi, battery, and speaker inside a cardboard box which held the button that activated BB-8.
