"[High Reliability] When OpenVPN goes down, the network is brought to a pause to allow for repair or reconfiguration, thereby ensuring that no data loss or corruption or miscommunication happens. This also acts as an additional layer of security." —vpn-services.bestreviews.net
"Pretty much every VPN company supports OpenVPN as standard, but a number of things serve to separate the best from the rest." —Pete Zaborszky, bestvpn.com (23 Apr 2013)
"OpenVPN has been integrated into SoftEther VPN, an open-source multi-protocol VPN server, to allow users connect to the VPN server from existing OpenVPN clients." —en.Wikipedia.org
OpenVPN is an open-source software application that implements virtual private network (VPN) techniques for creating secure point-to-point or site-to-site connections in routed or bridged configurations and remote access facilities. It uses a custom security protocol that utilizes SSL/TLS for key exchange. It is capable of traversing network address translators (NATs) and firewalls.

Requirements

  • Administrator privilege.
  • If not found, TAP Windows driver will be automatically installed on first run—and won't be uninstalled on exit.
    • We tried the "install-and-uninstall approach" for TAP Windows driver, but after several cycles of "install-and-uninstall" it just won't install anymore. That's why we choose to install it anyway ;)
    • We've tried any NSIS driver tricks. None works well. Got suggestions?

Portability Notes

  • OpenVPN do not have portable mode. It stores its settings in Windows registry and data folder while running.
  • Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
  • You can help by sending request to the official developer to add "portable mode" to their future release.
