Colombian art historian Claudia Isabel Navas will deliver the lecture on the Hispanic revolutionary and his involvement in the United States Battle of Pensacola of 1782. Miranda was a military leader who is regarded as the predecessor of Simón Bolívar. During the wars of independence, he successfully liberated much of South America from Spanish colonial rule. He was in contact with Antonio Nariño and Pedro Fermín de Vargas and influenced other Hispanic Americans Patriots with his writings and his journal El Colombiano (1810). Miranda used the name of Colombia and that of its citizens, “Colombianos”, to define a new Nation that has evolved over the years. He also created the three color flag that Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela share.
