The Making of a Muppets Sweetums Costume

When you decide to make a Muppets costume, you have large shoes to fill — sometimes literally. Imgur user JPoCreative stepped into those big shoes with their build of Sweetums from The Muppets. The brown fur-covered character is one of JPoCreative’s favorites. They’ve always wanted to do a cosplay of a Jim Henson character, and their wish has finally come true.

They started by finding the perfect fur to replicate Sweetums’ because they thought it was a crucial element. With the fur in hand, they began working on the structure of the character. They said:

Foam Structure: I build the base of the head out of EVA foam and attached it to hockey shoulder pads (That I had bought for another costume but didn’t end up using). A lot of this was just guessing measurements. I just had to make sure I could see through the mouth when it was on.

They came up with a creative solution for the seams on the foam:

Gnarly Seams: My seams where pretty nasty so I secured them by putting hockey tape over them. Since it’s fabric tape, it was great to use with contact cement because it just soaked it up and made it stick better.

You can see a couple of build photos below.
