How to Boil EVA Foam for a Leather Texture
One of the advantage of using EVA foam for costumes and props is how you can manipulate it into different textures. It’s a malleable enough surface to absorb stamps, imprints, and any sort of mark you put into it. One method to make EVA foam look like leather involves using aluminum foil. But ZakLabs has another technique. He boiled the material, and as you see above, the foam’s surface appears like pebbled leather. He says:
How did I make it? It’s simply 1/2″ Y20 EVA foam…that I BOILED! I put it in a big pot of boiling water (with lots of ventilation) for about 10-15 minutes and then took it out to cool. It cools rapidly and as it was cooling i kinda squished it all together. And it created this cool looking surface!
