LED protest signs 201 Varick Street, NYC after @ICEgov detains immigrant rights leader #IStandWithRavi
ICE detains immigrant rights leader, sparking massive protest – NY Daily News.
In a statement late Thursday, an ICE spokeswoman said Ragbir had “exhausted” his petitions and appeals and would be deported. “(He) does not have a legal basis to remain in the U.S.,” the statement from spokeswoman Rachael Yong Yow said. “He will remain in custody pending removal to Trinidad.”
The Varick Street Immigration Court | EOIR | Department of Justice is a block away from Adafruit. I took this photo and talked to the protesters on my way to the Adafruit factory. Adafruit is a NYC based, woman owned, USA manufacturer of open-source educational electronics. More about us here.
I took the photo and asked what the protest was about, and asked about the LED signs, they’re a simple, low-cost, clever design with off the shelf LED strands and a battery pack. Holes are poked through the black cardboard and the LEDs are pushed through, the wires on the back are taped down as well as the battery, lasts for hours and the LEDs can be removed and used for another sign later with a new message. The signs are light (light!) enough to hold with one hand and text message and take photos/videos. Post Christmas the LED strands are cheap and can found at many dollar stores.
How to Be A Digital Revolutionary has an overview of how to make a variety of LED signs.
In our store we stock a black RESIST bracelet which is a USB storage drive (64MB) and comes loaded with a copy of How to Be A Digital Revolutionary.
Additionally, on GitHub there’s “An electronic protest sign. #resist” how-to for a more advanced version which uses an Adafruit FEATHER.
