Blinkenrocket Badge with lovely LED matrix

Look at this glorious Blinkenrocket badge that showed up at Chaos Communication Congress! I’m already thanking Hackaday for reporting on this piece of handiwork, and it seems to use an interesting programming method—an audio interface.

It’s like in the bad old days of software stored on cassette tapes, but it’s a phenomenal interface for getting a simple animation out of a web app and straight into a piece of minimal hardware — just plug it into a laptop or cell phone’s audio out and press “play” in the browser.

After being wowed by the LED matrix, check out the simple production of the project, including color-coded parts that make it easy for young people to assemble. Muzy and overflow gave a talk on the project, but the best is their Github which gives the perfect description: “A fancy open source DIY soldering kit for everyone!” If you like the badge you can request a workshop, and no worries as the manual is also available in English. There’s nothing like a soldering project to start the next generation of engineers. Did you know that we also carry a simple soldering badge project of elegant design? It’s the Day of the Geek badge, which is a take on Day of the Dead, complete with a colorful assortment of LEDs to choose from for the eyes. Customize your skull just as you like it and celebrate your soldering success.
