Atom Portable (32/64 bit)

Atom Portable, a hackable text editor for the 21st Century!
"I came to Atom with a prejudice… the reported slowness and memory hungriness, made me to hesitate to try it… ... That’s the problem with information found on Internet: it quickly becomes stale… ... The minor issues mentioned above doesn’t prevent from using it: the good parts currently balance the bad ones. I will still recommend it. :-)" —Philippe Lhoste, philhosoft.github.io (2015-12-15)
"...overall editor performance has improved drastically over the past year, but it still lags behind other editors." —Clifford Fajardo, cliffordfajardo.com (January 24, 2016)
"Bad jokes aside, I was immediately struck by its insane slowness. For a text editor, it really takes a long time to launch! ... Aside from its slowness, and the fact that it eats RAM like an IDE, Atom is really a nice text editor. ... Atom seems to be what I want Emacs to be 1: an editor that’s extensible, mode-less and actively developed even though it is, sadly, just as heavy." —Lorenzo Villani, lorenzo.villani.me (06 Sep 2015)
Atom is a text editor that was originally conceived at GitHub as a way to combine the visual appeal of editors like Sublime Text with the extensibility and programmability of Emacs or Eclipse.

Release Details

We remove any additional packages/plugins from this release. You have to download/update it yourself.
This is such a heavyweight text editor—compared to our beloved Notepad++. But, well, it has such a beautiful looks. And makes you feel good using it ;)

DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release

Requirements 7-Zip, NPP/Notepad++ or other text editor, PortableApps.com Launcher Generator/PAL, PortableApps.com Installer/PAI.

  1. We'll use the 32 bit edition as example, you can infer from this example to upgrade the 64 bit only edition.
The 32 bit version is the "real portable" edition because you can use it both in Windows 32 and 64 bit. The 64 bit edition can only be used on Windows 64 bit.
We don't integrate the 32 bit into the 64 bit edition to make it fully portable because the size will be too huge—almost 1GB!
  2. Atom has deep folder structure, so we have to upgrade it in a top-hierarchy folder. Ideally a folder in a root directory, for example C:\TEST0—which is located in drive C's root (C:\)—or another example D:\WORKINGFOLDER in drive D's root (D:\), etc. In this example we will use C:\TEST0.
  3. Get the latest portable app. template, and extract the content with 7-Zip.
  4. Get the latest Atom release (zip file)—the 32 and/or 64 bit installer.
  5. Use 7-Zip to extract the downloaded installer contents to AtomPortable\App folder, Extract files
    Extract to AtomPortable\App
Note: For the 64 bit edition—after extraction—you have to go to Atom64Portable\App folder and rename the extracted Atom x64 folder to Atom.
  6. Browse to AtomPortable\App\AppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. 1.23.1.0 not 1.23.1. Update version
  7. Run PAL, paste the template folder address, and click Go—the new launcher will be created, Create new launcher
  8. Test the new launcher by following this guide.
  9. When all is OK, then delete the AtomPortable\Data folder and run PAI, paste the package folder address, and click Go—to create the installer package. Create installer
  10. Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Don't forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade :)
  11. If you find any changes that's not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support.

Portability Notes

  • Atom writes non essential data to Windows data folders while running.
  • Java portable—if used—writes to Windows registry and data folders while running.
  • Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.

Acknowledgements

We make use of Gareth Flowers' work, so now it stores everything in the portable Data folder.
