7-Zip is a utility program to help you extract compressed files and create your own compressed files in several different formats. With these tools you can easily send large quantities of information or open compressed files you receive without hassle.

DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release

Requirements 7-Zip, NPP/Notepad++ or other text editor, PortableApps.com Launcher Generator/PAL, PortableApps.com Installer/PAI.

1. Get the latest portable app. template, and extract the content with 7-Zip.
2. Get the latest:
   1. 7-Zip release: 7-Zip for 32-bit Windows (.exe), 7-Zip for 64-bit Windows x64 (Intel 64 or AMD64) (.exe), and 7-Zip Extra (.7z),
   2. 7-Zip Theme Manager.
3. Extract the 32 bit installer to 7-ZipPortable\App\7-Zip folder,
   
   Do the same thing with the 64 bit installer to App\7-Zip64 folder, the 7-Zip extra package to App\7-ZipExtra folder, and 7-Zip Theme package to App\7zTM folder.
4. Browse to App\7-Zip and App\7-Zip64 folder and delete Uninstall.exe.
5. Look up version from the 7zFM.exe "Properties" window,
   
6. Browse to 7-ZipPortable\App\AppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. 18.1.0.0 not just 18.1.0 nor 18.1,

    PackageVersion=18.1.0.0
    DisplayVersion=18.01 with 7zTM 2.1.1 (32/64 bit)
   

7. We've provided the 7-Zip Theme Manager launcher. It is actually a simple launcher that works just like a common Windows shortcut, so no need to regenerate it.
8. Run PAL, paste the template folder address C:\0TEST\7-ZipPortable, and click Go—a new launcher will be created,
   
9. Test the new launchers by following this guide.
10. When all is OK, then delete the 7-ZipPortable\Data folder and run PAI, paste the package folder address C:\0TEST\7-ZipPortable, and click Go—to create the installer package.
    
11. Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Don't forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade :)
12. If you find any changes that's not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support.

Portability Notes

• 7-Zip do not have portable mode. It stores its settings in Windows registry and write help file data to Windows data folders while running.
• Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
• You can help by sending request to the official developer to add "portable mode" to their future release.
