The Competition Law Association will be holding an evening meeting on Tuesday 15 January 2019 at Bristows LLP, 100 Victoria, Embankment, London. Registration for the event will start at 6pm followed by the talk and discussion at 6:15pm. David Rosenberg and Darren Smyth will speak on “Lyrica in the Supreme Court: broader lessons for pharmaceuticals”. There is no additional charge for members, for non-members, the charge will be £50 (£35 for full time academic/public sector employees and £10 for students, trainees and pupil barristers). The Inaugural Symposium of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for European Intellectual Property and Information Rights,entitled “European Intellectual Property and its Limits”, will be held on Wednesday 16 January 2019, 9.30-18.00 at Bournemouth University, Executive Business Centre. The Symposium will focus on a number of significant recent IP developments, including the unitary patent and the unified patent court, the completion of the EU trade mark reform package, and the approval of the directive on copyright in the digital single market. The Intellectual Property Awareness Network (IPAN) is organizing an event on IP, Trade Secrets and Risk Management, which will be held on 30 January 2019 at CIPA Offices in London. The event will feature two talks: Donal O’Connell, CEO of Chawton Innovation Limited who will discuss “Management of trade secrets and their risks in commercial exploitation” and Ian Rosam, CEO of HPO Risk Solutions Limited, who will present “IP risk management and advanced systems”. University of Geneva and the International Trademark Association(INTA), will hold a conference to explore 3D marks and other non-traditional trade marks. The event will be held on 14 February 2019 with speakers from WIPO, EUIPO, Swiss IP Office, industry, academia and practice. Registration fee is CHF 450 for the general public (including the book which will be published later on the book series pi-ip, www.pi-ip.ch). A conference titled “Changing Regulation of Pharmaceuticals: Pricing, Intellectual Property, Trade, and Ethics”, will take place on 5 and 6 April 2019 in Sacramento, California at University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. The conference will explore questions concerning the modern legal treatment of pharmaceuticals and its effects on the high cost of healthcare. The conference will feature over 40 confirmed speakers.
On 30-31 May 2019, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) Boards of Appeals, together with the EUIPO Academy and the International Cooperation and Legal Affairs Department of EUIPO, are organising the second IP Mediation Conference. The conference takes place in EUIPO’s headquarters in Alicante, Spain. Leading experts from national and international institutions, academia and from EUIPO f will gather to address a wide range of topics in the field of intellectual property mediation. Writing Competition
Georgetown Law’s Institute for Technology Law & Policy and The Georgetown Law Technology Review are pleased to announce a new student writing competition to encourage original writing in the field of tech law and policy. Entrants are invited to submit papers addressing a legal or public policy question relating to artificial intelligence, machine learning, the use of data analytics and/or algorithmic decision-making. Up to three winners will be selected, with a First Prize of $4,000, Second Prize of $2,500, and Third Prize of $1,000. Winning papers may be selected for publication in The Georgetown Law Technology Review. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. EST on 31 May 2019. Call for Papers
9th International Conference on Information Law and Ethics (ICIL) will be held on 11-13 July 2019 in Rome. This year’s topic features “Psychological and socio-political dynamics within the Web: new and old challenges to Information Law and Ethics”. ICIL calls for papers on intellectual property, data protection, freedom of information, individual rights and information, privacy, cyberbullism, online harassment, trolling, cyberlaw and cyberethics, media law and ethics, digital divide and information technology, e-government, surveillance, intellectual freedom, open access, and the digital divide. Job Opportunity
In collaboration with the Machine Learning Group, the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge invites applications for a postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the project “Trust and Transparency in AI”, which spans multiple disciplines, including machine learning, law, psychology and policy. Funding for this position is available for two years. Candidates are expected to have expertise in at least one of these fields, e.g. machine learning or law, including a relevant PhD.
