Septor 2019 is Available, Based on Debian's "Testing"
Septor is a Linux distribution which provides users with a pre-configured computing environment for surfing the Internet anonymously. It is based on Debian's "Testing" branch and it uses Privoxy, a privacy-enhancing proxy, together with the Tor anonymity network to modify web page data and HTTP headers before the page is rendered by the browser. The distribution uses KDE Plasma as the preferred desktop environment and it also includes a launcher for downloading the latest Tor Browser, OnionShare for anonymous file sharing, and Ricochet for anonymous instant messaging.
Happy New Year! The first announcement of the year 2019 comes courtesy of Septor, a new distribution in the DistroWatch database. It is part of the growing number of projects that focus on preserving the anonymity and privacy of the user while browsing the Internet. Septor is based on Debian's "Testing" branch and it uses KDE Plasma as the default desktop environment.
Debian (Buster) was used as the basis for the education of the operating system in its still development version, with a KDE graphical environment. Distribution can be used via live mode, with the help of USB media or installed classically on a hard drive. In accordance with the project task, for the preinstalled software, applications that we thought were adequate for distribution of this type were selected. A couple of applications got a replacement, so now the complete list of programs looks like this:
- Dolphin and KFind to manage and search files
- Synaptic and Gdebi to manage and install the software
- Graphics / Multimedia: GIMP, Gwenview. VLC, K3b, Guvcview
- Office: LibreOffice, Kontact, KOrganizer, Okular, Kwrite, Kate
- Internet: Tor Viewer, Thunderbird, Ricochet IM, HexChat, QuiteRSS, OnionShare
- Tools: Gufw, Konsole, Ark, Sweeper, KGpg, Cleopatra, MAT, KWallet, VeraCrypt, Rosa Image Writer, Bootis
For root (root) access to files, an icon is available in the menu. At the first launch, the Ricochet IM client will ask whether the user wants to connect via the Tor network. HexChat and QuiteRSS are set by default on the Tor network, and users can modify this by setting these applications in Network.
