Are Exact Match Domains Good For SEO?

https://www.lockedownseo.com/ Do partial match domains or exact match domains improve your SEO? In most cases, Google will look at the other ranking factors around a business to determine it’s ranking. The case where Exact Match Domains (EMDs) and Partial Match Domains (PMDs) seem to work really well is when you have the target search phrase and the business name match the domain name.

Let’s say you want to rank for „Nashville plumbing”. If your business name is „Nashville Plumbing” and your domain name is NashvillePlumbing[dot]com, then Exact Match Domains work very well. The reason being that Google thinks when people are searching for plumbing in Nashville, that they are doing a branded search for your business name. This may be why people see this tactic work in local SEO.

Partial match domains seem to influence where you rank, provided it fits your Business Category on Google My Business. If your business is centered around engineering, and the word „Engineering” or „Engineers” is in your business name, then having the fragment „engineering” in your domain name seems to help a bit.

This doesn’t mean that you can rank for anything you want, just because it is in your domain name. The words in your domain name should fit your business name, or the category your business fits into. When you combine a [region] and a [service or product] in your domain name and business name, that confuses Google, and they think people are searching for your brand, not a generic list of service providers.

However, if your business name doesn’t contain your target region (if you’re doing local SEO) or your service (if you’re selling a specific service or product), then it is best to choose a memorable brand name.

Google is trying to shift away from links as a main ranking factor, and trying to reward strong brands with better rankings. Links will probably never go away completely, but you should be trying to build a memorable brand, that is closely associated with the service you provide.

The Entity Graph, or Knowledge Graph, is what Google has spent time building, and is constantly refining. In the Entity Graph, all organizations, people, places, and things are separte entities that are associated with and connected to other entities. Like the human neural net, Google is trying to have a deeper understanding of all entities in the world, and how they are connected to one another.

For this reason, the advantage you have today from your business name or domain name being an exact match to your main search term may be temporary. As Google continually reassesses the different companies in your space, simply having the city or service your provide in the domain name may not be sufficient to rank you in the future.

The best advice you can heed is to develop a strong brand that is known both in the physical and digital world for excellence in your field. Simple naming conventions provide some limited SEO boost for now, but Google may soon understand that naming yourself after a search term doesn’t necessarily mean you should rank #1 for that search query.
