Data Leak Compensation Scam Spotted by Researchers (01/16/2020)
Kaspersky has detected an online fraud scheme designed to trick people into thinking they are owed compensation. Under the pretext of offering compensation for personal data leaks, scammers instead urge users to buy "temporary US Social Security Numbers" worth around $9 USD each. Victims were found in multiple countries. The scheme involves a site allegedly owned by the Personal Data Protection Fund, founded by the US Trading Commission. The fund purportedly issues compensation to those who may have been subject to a personal data leak and is available to citizens in any country.

Ransom Paid After Christmas Cyber Attack on Albany Airport (01/14/2020)
The computer management provider for the Albany County Airport Authority faced a ransomware attack over the Christmas holidays and the virus then infiltrated the authority's servers, Times Union reported. Airport CEO Philip Calderone confirmed that the authority paid the ransom and revealed that it was "under six figures." Calderone also said that LogicalNet was the airport authority's computer management provider and its networks had originally been breached. The attack then spread to the airport's system. The airport authority has since terminated its contract with LogicalNet. The ransomware attack did not impact travelers' information, security, payment data, or airport operations. The stolen data consisted of budget spreadsheets and other administrative information.

Texas School District Victimized in $2.3 Million Phishing Scam (01/14/2020)
A Texas school district lost $2.3 million USD in a phishing scheme and the FBI and local law enforcement are investigating, Newsweek reported. Three separate fraudulent transactions took place in November, affecting the Manor Independent School District, and an employee noticed the issue in December. The employee immediately reported the findings to local police.
