Cyber Thieves Increased Phishing Schemes to Coincide with Q4 Holidays (02/10/2020)
Kaspersky researchers detected a 9.5% growth in financial phishing in the final quarter of 2019, with holiday-season spam and scam activity also growing in numbers and variety. Financial phishing alone increased to 52.6% in the fourth quarter and the researchers noted that popular brands like Amazon are often used as bait as scammers create fake pages that look like the authentic ones. These fake pages are used to steal credentials.

FBI Reports Cybercriminal Activity Resulted in Theft of $3.5 Billion+ in 2019 (02/11/2020)
During 2019, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) investigated more than 467,000 complaints of suspected Internet crime. The reported losses from these incidents exceeded $3.5 billion. According to the IC3's Internet Crime Report, the top three crime types reported by victims in 2019 were phishing/vishing/smishing/pharming; non-payment/non-delivery; and extortion.

Q4 DDoS Attacks Used ARMS, P2P Botnets to Wreak Havoc (02/13/2020)
In the final quarter of 2019, attackers used non-standard protocols in their amplification attacks, turning to Apple Remote Management Service, part of the Apple Remote Desktop application for remote administration. Q4 was also marked by the growing number of peer-to-peer botnets since these are difficult to neutralize. Cybercriminals turned to South African ISPs to target in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, resulting in downtime. These details and more are available in Kaspersky's Q4 DDoS Report.
