The VHS History of Everything

William Gibson famously remarked that “The future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.” But what about the past? In other societies elders hold space for the past. We’ve got the internet. VHS tapes were once cutting edge entertainment. They transformed the way we watched movies and television, and paved the way for DVRs, YouTube, and Netflix.

Now those crazy days are being uploaded to the internet for all to see. Here’s more from The Verge:

The Internet Archive, perhaps best known for the extremely handy Wayback Machine you can use to find older versions of webpages, also has free movies, books, software, and music. Yet a little known part of the organization’s media trove includes uploaded recordings from VHS tapes, as I learned today thanks to this Vice article. They live on The VHS Vault, and as of this writing, there are more than 20,000 recordings you can peruse.
