Sebenarnya kalian bisa menginstall kernel Ubuntu dengan mengunduh paket .deb yang disediakan, namun dengan mengcompile manual kalian bisa lebih leluasa untuk memilih modul mana yang ingin diinstall dan tidak.

Greg has just released Linux Kernel 3.10.5 and he also posted a new blog post about a new kernel being labeled as LTS (Long Term Support) and that is 3.10.x. It's been some time since he is willing to take a stable kernel into LTS and the last time was 3.4.x.

I'm still not sure whether Pat is willing to take Linux Kernel 3.10 as the default kernel in Slackware, but if the fix for the Sandy Bridge resume bug has been fixed in 3.10.x along with other fixes, i guess there's a chance that it will be used as the default kernel stock used in Slackware 14.1.

I'm already running Linux Kernel 3.10.5 on my main desktop at home and so far, everything works as i hoped. There has been a patch for NVidia driver (although i must admit that it's an ugly hack) and also VMWare Workstation and Player.

After having 7 RC releases, finally Linus Torvalds is convinced with the development of Linux Kernel 3.4 and just pushed out Linux Kernel 3.4 and announce it on Linux Kernel Mailing List.

There was a last-minute changes from Peter Alvin about the GNU ld bug, but Linus took the patch anyway.

Greg has released a special edition of a stable kernel with only a single fix, which is to fix the power consumption for portable devices, such as laptops and netbooks. The patch is touching the ASPM (Active State Power Management) area and it was previously poorly implemented so that it consumes more power than it should be.

Matthew Garrett worked on this problem and he finally pushed his work into Linux Kernel 3.3 which is now on development and Greg wanted to prepare a special release of stable kernel that only has one patch to make it easier for user to spot any differences compared to previous release.

I think it's worthed to have this kernel available on -Current since it will make laptops/netbooks life longer since there is a decreament in power consumption.

There has been a lot of debates whether Linus will release the next major Kernel as 2.6.40, 2.8, or 3.0. Well, the answer is now definite. Linus will use a new naming as Linux Kernel 3.0 for the next release as he already tagged 3.0-rc1. The reason is because the number in the current 2.6.x series has reached 39 and the development has grown so much. In fact, previous 2.2 and 2.4 didn't get this big, so he thought it would be nice to bump the kernel version to a fresh one and thus it goes to 3.0.

So, the next Slackware release will likely use Linux Kernel 3.0 for it's default kernel. It has big improvements to previous kernel releases, but there might be some drawbacks. The 3.0 kernel will likely to remove some old hardware supports, so if you are using an old hardware, this is probably the perfect timing to invest for new hardware in the future.

If Slackware keeps using SLACKWARE_VERSION.KERNEL_VERSION naming scheme, then the next Slackware release could be 14.30 14.0 (Thanks to Pat for correcting this)
