As part of the mainstream media campaign to drown America in liberal lies, the New York Times prints Sam Tanenhaus' long, loving article on "reformicons" -- the Republican New Ideas grifters I wrote about a month ago at the Village Voice. This excerpt will give you some idea:

On Jan. 8, the day before the reformers met for their brainstorming session, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida stood in the Lyndon B. Johnson room at the Capitol — it was the 50th anniversary of Johnson’s declaration of a war on poverty — and announced a plan to create a “revenue-neutral flex fund” that would disburse federal funds to the states to spend as they wished on antipoverty programs. The response was mixed. A Brookings Institution scholar said the idea was workable, but liberals warned that bloc grants give too much power to the states. At the same time, a scholar at the Heritage Foundation argued that collecting money at the federal-government level and handing it out to states is the “exact wrong way to produce conservative policies.”

But for reformers, it was a breakthrough.

[Pause to reflect that these people have ridiculous life priorities, and need to be shaken like paint cans in old-fashioned department stores and told to 'reform' their own dork asses, starting out by taking some drugs and jumping into a fountain]

The plan wouldn’t save a dime in the short run — in fact, it would most likely increase costs — but it met the bigger ideological goal of “incentivizing” work, a pet theme on the right since the days of [Irving] Kristol and his liberal ally Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Mmm, that's some good reform right there! But since so many white people are falling out of the middle class into poverty, will it be as easy as it was in Moynihan's time to convince them that the poor need bootstrappado?

The punchline to this reform bullshit is what conservatives are actually doing these days, as you can see just by reading the news:

Celebrating a Supreme Court decision that yanks birth control coverage from women because Jesus;
Blocking buses of immigrants from entering a California town;
Calling for America to go back to Iraq.

So while reformicons play patty-cake, the people they will allegedly lead into an enlightened new age are dancing around the same anti-contraception, anti-immigrant, pro-war bonfires that exercised them in decades gone by. Meanwhile in Texas, which conservatives like to point to as a laboratory of Republican ideas, the state GOP has endorsed repealing the Voting Rights Act, among other boob-bait. Reform is just something to make the starched-collar crowd feel better about themselves.

UPDATE. "Reading through the comments, I see many of us hit on the 'incentivize work' nugget o' shit," says Derelict, and I can see how that particular bit of awfulness would give most normal people pause. The actual Room to Grow manifesto Tanenhaus and his subjects are pimping contains several similar New Ideas, like this, written by Michael Strain:

The federal minimum wage requires that potential employers take a $7.25 per hour risk on long-term unemployed workers -- workers who are already seen as quite risky compared to applicants who are coming from other jobs or have been employed more recently. The government should lower the risk associated with hiring long-term unemployed workers by temporarily lowering the minimum wage that firms must pay them.

Now, now, he did say "temporary":

Temporarily lower minimum wages for the long-term unemployed should be coupled with a temporary subsidy (through an enhanced Earned Income Tax Credit or a wage subsidy) to ensure that no one who works full time and heads a household lives in poverty.

Instead of subsidizing the peons, let's subsidize businesses so they can pay them less -- that's one beauty part. And there another: A hint of how long that "temporary" subsidy would last comes in another part of the same section written by Michael Strain, in which he bitches about Obamacare and its subsidies:

The law gives subsidies to households with income up to 400 percent of the federal poverty line (this year, that would mean up to $94,200 for a family of four) in order to help with the cost of purchasing health insurance. The more money you make, the smaller the subsidy you receive. Because a little extra work results in losing some of the beneﬁt workers receive from the government, the “subsidy phaseout” operates as a tax that discourages work.

Were his EITC plan ever to pass into law, how long do you think it would take for Strain the Cutter to confront Strain the Giver and tell him his "subsidy phaseout" was making people workshy -- that sub-minimum wage workers were declining to bootstrap themselves to higher wages because their cushy government-subsidized jobs had deincentivized them -- and that it has to go? So it would -- and the workers would stay at their starvation wages, because why would Republicans restore a minimum wage they'd always hated and which their Reform scam had finally enabled them to kill?

SEO and Eye Tracking for Informational & Transactional Queries

Understanding usersâ€™ behaviour and expectations for web search can be very valuable for site developers and web workers. While many SEO techniques rely on the actual actions of the user, for example mouse clicks or query streams, eye tracking can give us more detailed observations about how users actually interact with the information in front of them.

The fact that the top search results get the most attention from users is self-evident. But a study by Google backed up claims that strategies for scanning search results are different for different task types. These two task types are defined as transactional and informational. It means that you must understand which of these terms describes your website before deciding on SEO and SEM activity.

This is the standard and well known “Google Golden Triangle”

Youâ€™ll notice an â€˜Fâ€™ shaped scan pattern. The eye tends to travel vertically along the left hand-side of the results, looking for relevant words and then scan to the right if something catches the userâ€™s attention.

This is the eye-tracking result for a transaction-oriented query:

and for an information-oriented query:

The difference is considerable, with the eye scanning further downwards along transaction oriented sites, looking for several options, and scanning across for information oriented ones, seeking more information about a particular result. These images present rather bad news for informative websites. While transaction oriented sites can afford to be further down the search listings, information-oriented sites cannot.

Microsoft conducted a similar study on how users respond to a set of search results. They also looked at two kinds of search tasks: navigational (where users are seeking a specific Web page) and informational (where users seek specific information). The analyses showed not only what people mainly look at, but also what they select. Of course, it is clicking rather than looking that has a major effect on the performance of a website.

This table illustrates the percentage of people who looked at the result (in black), versus those who clicked on it (in red).

For navigational search, everyone looked at the first result. When the target was position 2, this dropped to 89%, then down to 56% for 8th, which isnâ€™t so bad.

For informational search, the chance of looking at the item drops further from 94% for position 1, to 22% for position 8. Microsoft results correspond nearly exactly with Googleâ€™s triangles.

The decreased probability of clicking on the item is obviously related to the probability of looking at it. However, the dramatic fall for informational search from position 1 to position 2, is explained by the strong confidence users have in search engine performance. Participants were fairly likely to look at the results for position 2 and lower, but were extremely disinclined to click on them.

So what conclusions can be drawn for information-oriented websites? If people trust the ranking determined by search engines like Google more than their own judgement, we should actually optimise our websites for the â€˜Big Gâ€™, not for the users. All we need to do is to look reliable as, when their goal is to acquire some kind of information, searchers generally donâ€™t care where that information is found, so long as the destination site looks authoritative.

In light of these studies, it seems that I have no excuse anymore when my boss says that the position 3, or even position 2 in the SERPs isnâ€™t good enough. He is right! Being in position 2 is worse by as much as 56% than being in position 1.

ECS Liva Mini PC kit is the smallest x86 PC in the world so far. The BIOS is UEFI, so that only Ubuntu besides Windows 8.1 can be installed on it. I select to install with LVM.

You may need a powered USB hub to connect the keyboard and mouse as well as install device (such as USB DVD-ROM or USB pendrive). Since it comes with 32GB/64GB eMMC (SSD drive), you may required to connect to an external hard drive for more storage.

The maximum power consumption is about 12W under Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

The sound and network device are working out of the box. However, the wireless and bluetooth devices do not work properly even you download the wireless driver from the official site (it is still beta at the moment).

After some tries and fails, I finally make the wireless device working. However, the bluetooth device does not work at the moment.

How I make the wireless device working? Here you are :

Step 1 :

Write down the MAC address of the wireless card.

Step 2 :

Download the beta driver from the official site. Extract it and go to ~/Downloads/Ubuntu/WLAN.

Rename the "brcmfmac-sdio.txt" to "brcmfmac-43241b4-sdio.txt".

mv brcmfmac-sdio.txt brcmfmac43241b4-sdio.txt

Change the "macaddr" at brcmfmac43241b4-sdio.txt to the previous written down MAC address.

e.g. macaddr=24:0a:64:4c:43:34

Step 3 :

Move the /lib/firmware/brcm directory to another place.

sudo mv /lib/firmware/brcm ~/Downloads/

Step 4 :

Install git package.

sudo apt-get install git

Download the wireless firmware.

cd ~/Downloads

git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

After that copy the ~/Downloads/linux-firmware/brcm to /lib/firmware/.

sudo cp -R ~/Downloads/linux-firmware/brcm /lib/firmware/

Copy the brcmfmac43241b4-sdio.txt to /lib/firmware/brcm/.

sudo cp ~/Downloads/Ubuntu/WLAN/brcmfmac43241b4-sdio.txt /lib/firmware/brcm/

Step 5 :

Comment out the blacklist.

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Locate "blacklist bcm43xx" and make it to "#blacklist bcm43xx".

Step 6 :

Reboot the box.

However, the wifi signal is not very strong indeed.

Remarks

You may need to do some changing on the box with the following package :

sudo apt-get install libavcodec-extra

sudo apt-get install indicator-cpufreq

To increase the performance, you need to NOT to use SWAP.

sudon nano /etc/rc.local

Insert the following before "exit 0" :

sysctl -w vm.swappiness=0

Then, reboot your box.

For the video playback, you are required to install the following packages.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sander-vangrieken/vaapi

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install mplayer-vaapi gstreamer1.0-vaapi gstreamer1.0-libav libva-intel-vaapi-driver vainfo mencoder-vaapi

We are all accustomed to using USB devices with desktop PCs and laptops in the form of mass storage devices, headsets, webcams, scanners, printers, and more. In the virtual world, where your actual desktop may be many miles away from your client device, physically plugging in a USB device is not possible. VMware Horizon with View supports using USB devices in the virtual desktop by using USB device remoting. View 5.1 and later introduced some complex configuration options for the usage and management of USB devices in a View virtual desktop session.

In order to assist users with these remoting options, I have published a white paper that gives a high-level overview of USB redirection, discusses the configuration options, and provides some practical worked examples to illustrate how these options can be used. USB Device Redirection, Configuration, and Usage in VMware Horizon with View is now available. I hope that this white paper will help you navigate some of the difficulties, options, and configurations to maximize the VDI end-user experience.

As a supplement to the paper, I have helped put together a video, Using Composite USB Devices in Horizon View Desktops, which talks viewers through USB-device splitting, and shows a worked example of how to configure splitting for a USB dictation audio-device.
