LyX is an open source and free software project that has been designed from the ground up to act as a document processor, encouraging users to write their documents based on structure instead of appearance. It is a WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean) editor that combines the flexibility and power of the LaTeX document markup language and TeX typesetting system.

LyX is for people who want their writing to look great, right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting details, “finger painting” font attributes or futzing around with page boundaries. You just write. On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output — or richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced — looks like nothing else.

Features at a glance

Key features include a mathematical formula editor, equation arrays, support of math macros, basic CAS (Computer Algebra System) support, equation numbering, support for custom matrices, algorithms and math macros, theorems, standard word processing functionality, numbered section headings, support for captions, subtables and subfigures, interactive WYSIWYG tables, character styles, as well as dedicated modules.

Additionally, LyX features support for a wide range of graphic formats, including Dia, SVG, EPS and XFig, support for wrapped tables and figures, support for intelligently floating tables and figures, image scaling, rotation and cropping, support for Right-to-Left languages like Arabic and Hebrew, SGML-tools support, FAX functionality, and text completion support.
