LyX is an open source and free software project that has been designed from the ground up to act as a document processor, encouraging users to write their documents based on structure instead of appearance. It is a WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean) editor that combines the flexibility and power of the LaTeX document markup language and TeX typesetting system.

No more endless tinkering with formatting details, “finger painting” font attributes or futzing around with page boundaries. You just write. On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output — or richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced — looks like nothing else.

How to Install / update Latest Version of Lyx on Ubuntu Derivative System :

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install lyx

To remove lyx, do :
$ sudo apt-get remove lyx
