Adafruit’s new GEMMA M0 wearable microcontroller comes with CircuitPython support fresh from the factory. Plug it into USB and use any text editor to open and edit the “.py” file…it’s just that simple, no IDE to install!
We’re updating most of our “classic” GEMMA guides on the Adafruit Learning System to provide example CircuitPython code for the new board along with the original Arduino sketches, and bringing the latter up-to-date where needed. GEMMA M0 can run either one.
With something like 160 GEMMA-related guides in the Adafruit Learning System, watch for updates in small batches. Here are the latest:
Neopixel Jewel 10 Minute Necklace — This is a wonderful intro project for learning to make things with neopixels and microcontrollers. Get your kids involved — they’ll love showing off their glowing handmade necklace. Customize the code and design your own light effects, and change it up as often as you like to match different outfits or environments.
Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 3D Printed Guardian Sword with NeoPixel LEDs — This is the Guardian Sword from Zelda. It’s fully 3D Printed and has a ton of NeoPixel LEDs. This thing is super bright and looks so awesome! Pedro designed the blade in Autodesk Fusion 360 using reference images from the game. It prints in several pieces that connect together using screws.
Close Encounters Hat — The Close Encounters hat is a nod to the incredible movie — with lights and sounds that mimic the mother ship, all stowed under the brim. A photocell triggers the action for GEMMA, while the NeoPixels and piezo buzzer provide the show. Get ready to change up that next kiss or rock a dark movie theater.
Kaleidoscope Eyes (Trinket-Powered NeoPixel LED Ring Goggles) — Here’s a project to dazzle onlookers at Halloween parties, cosplay conventions, raves or at Burning Man. These full-color animated LED goggles attract a LOT of attention! Adafruit NeoPixel LED rings fit perfectly inside the eyecups of most 50mm round goggles — a very common size. It’s almost as if these rings were made with this project in mind! (Sneaking in a Trinket guide here — it can work equally well with either Trinket M0 or Gemma M0!)
NeoPixie Dust Bag — No fairy costume is complete without a glowing pixie dust bag. This one uses a touch sensor to cycle through colors on the beautifully twinkling NeoPixel rings, all powered by a tiny GEMMA microcontroller. This sophisticated-looking, rechargeable prop is easy to build with just a little bit of soldering.
