John Carpenter’s “Christine” (@TheHorrorMaster / @SacredBones) | Light and sound #adabox10 @adafruit
While exploring all the delights of light and sound, I found myself thinking of the fear and fun of John Carpenter’s 1983 film Christine. This underrated classic about a car that kills showcases uncanny Carpenter’s ability to merge synth music with simple everyday things, like a car headlight (or a kitchen knife) to create a feeling of threat and fear.
The “show me” moment around 1.15 is a nice example of a trick this film plays a couple of times: Headlights + Synth = Terror.
Brooklyn’s Sacred Bones record label have done a lot in recent years to help keep John Carpenter’s sounds alive and available. You can check some of those out below.
John Carpenter has the unique distinction of being one of the best directors and composers of the 70’s and 80’s. His pioneering use of synthesizers to create taut hypnotic tension for his iconic horror and sci-fi films gave his work a unique atmospheric signature. Forever self-deprecating, he’s downplayed his genius saying he did his own scores because he was fast and cheap, but that unfairly dismisses his unmistakable artistry. – Smells Like Infinite Sadness
